120 Sanitation Workers Receive Sneakers, Food Items and Health Education at Lifecamp/Gwarinpa Outreach

Abuja, Nigeria — June 27, 2026

More than 120 sanitation workers serving the Lifecamp and Gwarinpa communities were celebrated and supported on Saturday as the Sneakers for Sweepers (S4S) initiative held another impactful community outreach at Hilltop Roundabout, Lifecamp, Abuja.

The outreach, which brought together male and female sanitation workers from across the two districts, was designed to honour the individuals who keep the city clean while providing practical support for their health, well-being, safety and personal development.

The atmosphere was lively from the start as participants were welcomed with a breakfast of hot pap and akara before the day’s activities commenced. An energetic Master of Ceremonies kept spirits high with interactive games and competitions, with winners receiving household gifts including mudus of flour, garri, bottles of groundnut oil, smart LED water bottles, portable rechargeable fans and other useful items.

Recognising the unique challenges sanitation workers face daily, the programme featured sessions delivered by professionals from different fields. A security expert educated participants on personal safety, particularly as many sanitation workers leave their homes as early as 4:30 a.m. to begin work, focusing on situational awareness and practical measures to stay safe travelling to and from work in Abuja.

The health segment was led by a chiropractor and integrative musculoskeletal specialist, who demonstrated proper body mechanics and ergonomic techniques for lifting, bending and picking up objects, simple but effective ways to reduce strain on the back, joints and muscles and help prevent avoidable workplace injuries.

The outreach also addressed the spiritual well-being of participants. Delivering a heartfelt message, Pastor Chris Ibadan encouraged the sanitation workers to place their trust in God despite life’s challenges, followed by an altar call during which several participants publicly gave or rededicated their lives to Christ, one of the day’s most emotional moments.

One of the most inspiring highlights came unexpectedly. As the programme progressed, a passer-by identified simply as Mr. Ibrahim, returning from his morning workout, was so moved by what he witnessed that he removed his own sneakers and donated them directly to the initiative. “The sweepers need any encouragement they can get, and this was an opportunity to give,” he said.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the project, Sneakers for Sweepers Project Director Juliet C. Eke expressed sincere appreciation for the spontaneous act of generosity, describing it as a powerful reminder that everyone can make a difference through simple acts of kindness.

With the support of more than 50 dedicated volunteers, the event ran seamlessly as volunteers coordinated activities, distributed materials and assisted participants throughout the day. As the outreach concluded, every sanitation worker received a pair of sneakers alongside food items including rice, garri and cooking oil, practical support aimed at improving both their comfort on the job and the well-being of their families.

Music provided by the event’s DJ transformed the venue into a joyful celebration, with the sanitation workers dancing enthusiastically throughout the programme.

Sneakers for Sweepers expressed gratitude to its sponsors and partners, including Banex Plaza, Samsung, and numerous individuals and organisations whose financial contributions, product donations and volunteer support made the outreach possible.

Speaking after the event, the project team reaffirmed its commitment to expanding the initiative to reach even more sanitation workers across Nigeria. “Every pair of sneakers represents dignity, encouragement and recognition for people whose work often goes unnoticed. We remain committed to ensuring that those who keep our communities clean know they are seen, valued and appreciated.”
